Located 248km. from Jammu, Kishtwar National Park occupies an area of 400 sq km. The park is the natural habitat of 15 mammal species including the musk deer and Himalayan black and brown bear. There are 50 species of birds. The park is characterized by the marked variations in topography as well as vegetation that are abundantly found here. These variations in topography, climate and altitude are the main reasons which contribute to the occurrence of different types of forest vegetation.
For witnessing the glorious fauna of the great Himalayan range, such as the Himalayan Musk Deer, Red Fox, Brown and Black Bear along with numerous resident and migratory birds, visit the Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve. Located at a height of 2,400m above sea level and with a coverage area of 180-sq-kms, this reserve is at a distance of 48-km from Srinagar. The best time to watch the wildlife is September to March.
It is situated just at the foothills of Himalaya in the plains of North Bengal. With an area of 130 sq.kms. it hosts a wide variety of flora and fauna.
It is the largest wildlife sanctuary in North Bengal with an area of 217 sq.kms. There are 240 species of birds, 20 species of mammals and various species of reptiles and fishes. One horn rhino is the uniqueness of the forest of Eastern Himalaya. Jaldapara is specially known for preservation of one horn rhino. An elephant safari in Jaldapara is the key attraction of Jaldapara.
The 87 sq.kms. National Park is well known for its wide range of bio-diversity that include 50 species of mammals, over 250 species of birds and many other amphibians, reptiles plants and trees. One horn rhino is the main attraction of Garumara. Besides there are species like leopard, elephant, barking dear and wild pig. If luck favors, one can see all these animals spending a couple of moments in the watch tower.
At the eastern most end of Jalpaiguri district there is Buxa Tiger Reserve the second largest tiger reserve in West Bengal. It is having an area of 750 sq.kms. with a core area of about 330 sq.kms. within this 315 sq.kms. is a sanctuary out of which about 115 sq.kms. area has been declared as national park.
These sanctuaries abound in a fascinating diversity of flora and fauna. The vast texture of massive trees sheltering varieties of orchids and resounded with echo of birds and wild animals make it a veritable paradise for lovers of nature and eco-tourism.
This is possibly the most well equipped marine aquarium in India, but the collection of specimens are poor. Some local common fishes are kept in this huge aquarium. There is no entry fee for the aquarium as on November 2005.
The Snow Leopard Breeding Center is devoted to the snow leopard breeding program. Snow leopards are one of the endangered species. Efforts are on worldwide to make endangered species breed under captivity, and Snow Leopard Breeding Center is one such effort.
Snow leopards are not known to breed under captivity; Kiran Maktan, however, made it possible. These snow leopards are kept in large enclosures, and visitors are allowed to watch them. Complete silence is a must while inside the Center.
