Sandayandi Cave Temple

Location

Located in a hill cave, the Sandayandi Temple is an ancient Hindu temple of great religious importance around Kamarajar. At the time of new moon every year, in the months of July/August, an annual religious festival is held at the temple attended by at least half a lakh pilgrims.

As one approaches the temple there is a huge banyan tree with a small shrine nearby which is also worshipped by the locals. There are many such small shrines in the surrounding areas.

Shri Kasi Vishwanathar temple

Location

Located in Athoor, is one of the oldest and most famous temples in the vicinity. The Lingam constructed in this temple is similar to Kasi temple lingam. Those who are unable to visit Kasi can get the blessings of Lord Shiva from here. The temple is over 1000 years old, and has many devotees in and around Athoor worshipping there. In December Karthikai Festival is celebrated in this temple.

Shri Vandi Kali Amman temple

Location

Shri Vandi Kali Amman temple of Athoor is notified as a vary famous temple. Once in a year a festival called 'thirevela' is celebrated here. Alternate festivals of Shri Vandi Kali Amman temple and the other year Muthal Amman temple happens here. The village people think that it is their pleasure celebrating this festival. Here a famous festival happens in the month of October, just like Thiruvaiyaru Mahothsava. Many famous musicians gather here and worship the Lord in "Shri Rama Bajanai Sangam". This kind of worship has been followed for more than 100 years.

Sri Kaalakatheeswarar Temple

Location

Even though the temple is very old, it came into lime light during the period of Thirumalai. Naicker who renovated several temples in and around Madurai god Kaalakatheeswarar and goddess Gnanambika are the presiding deities here. It was a practice to bring the idols of Abhirama Devi & Padmagiri Nagar from above mountain to this temple & Celebrate the Festival of Brahmasaram in the month of Chitrai. The Mandapam used for this purpose has been later embalished and the deities Kalakatheewarar & Gnanambikai were installed & consecrated during the 14th century.

Sri Kottai Mariamman Temple

Location

It is more than 200 years old. The Mariamman idol is said to be installed by the army men of Tippu Sultan at the fort of the mountain. Hence it is called Kottai (Fort) Mariamman temple of Dindigul. The temple is constructed in the shape of a square. There is a temple for Vetri Vinayaka at the South& Lord Muruga at the North of this temple. There is a Mandapam (Hall) in the centre of the ground in which there is a sculpture of a Lion facing the Sannidhi. The Sanctum Sanctorum is small & square shaped. The deity consecrated (Moolavar) is seen here, embedded deeply under the floor.

Chidambaram Temple

Location

Chidambaram is one of the most ancient and most celebrated of shrines in India. Unlike most Shiva temples, the icon or murti is not in the typical form of a linga. The temple is dedicated to Lord Nataraja - Lord Siva in the form of Cosmic Dancer. Chidambaram is one of the Panchabhoota Sthalams - temples built for the 5 elements said to embody Shiva - at Chidambaram (space), Kalahasti (wind), Thiruvanaikkovil (water), Tiruvannamalai (fire) and Kanchipuram (earth).

Padaleshwarar Temple

Location

Padaleshwarar Temple is situated in Thiruppadirippuliyur, Cuddalore. This temple is dedicated to the incarnation of Lord Shiva, Padaleshwarar. Thirupathiripuliyur in Cuddalore district is one of the ancient saivite shrines in Tamil nadu sanctified by the visit of two of the four chief nayanmars viz. THIRUNAVUKKARASAR and THIRUGNANASAMBANDHAR. The former part of the name of this sacred place indicates the sthalaviruksha PATHIRI TREE and the latter PULIYUR indicates the tiger legged saint who made penance in this place.
The Presiding Deity Lord Pataleeswarar is also known as THONDRA THUNAI NADHAR and the Goddess is named PERIYANAYAKI Amman. This is one of the most important temples in Cuddalore. This is an ancient and beautiful temple.
