Billeshwar Temple

Location

With a history that spans more than 500 years, the Billeswar Temple is situated at Belsor Village near Nalbari. The Billeswar Temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna, even though a Shiva Linga was said to have been found at this spot. According to legends, a priest once had a cow that refused to be milked. On following the cow, the priest found that the cow gave milk to a bush of 'virina,' a kind of grass. This incident came to the notice of the region's king; he got the place dug up and found a Shiva Linga at that spot. A temple was erected at that spot named Birreswar, which was later changed to Billeswar, now known as Belsor. The temple was destroyed in a natural calamity once and was rebuilt by an Ahom king and Lakshmi Singha.
