Sulthan Bathery

Location

Located in the hilly eastern part of Wayanad district, 35 km from Lakkidi, Sultan Bathery is a base to explore areas of Muthanga and Eddakal. The place was named after Tipu Sultan who cleared a 14th Century Jain Temple of its idols to store ammunition dump here.

The Sulthan Bathery is also referred to as the Sultan Battery at times. This quaint town was originally named Ganapativattom, but its name was changed after Tipu Sultan of Mysore captured the Jain temple during the 18th century. He used the temple as a battery, and thus Sultan's Battery was coined. The Jain temple that was captured and then used as a battery was originally built during the 13th century. There are two other Jain temples that are also located in this same general area. The Ganapati Temple and the Mariyamman Temple are also popular places to visit.
