Location

Panchalamkurichi Fort, an ancient fort, is located at Salikulam nearby the holy town of Thiruchendur. This fort has a long history of battles and is associated with the growth and ruins of many Kingdoms ruled over this region. It was the nerve centre of the uprising and fall of many rulers including Veera Pandya Kattabomman.

This historical fort is in ruins now. It is believed that Veera Pandya Kattabommu, the famous Tamil ruler constructed the fort of Panchalam Kurichi. The fort was partially damaged in a battle in 1799, when Kattabomman was captured by the enemies, British East India Company. The British looted the fort and demolished most of it. Later it was renovated by Kattabommu’s brother after recapturing it from British through a fierce battle. This fort is an attractive tourist destination for Historians.
