Mahakali Caves

Location

Mahakali Caves, also known earlier as Kondivita Caves, are located between Aarey Milk colony and Borivali National park in Mumbai. These are rock cut caves, carved out of solid hard rocks, with color of black basalt and are located at scenic picturesque Udayagiri hills. These caves, which were served as Buddhist monasteries, date back to two thousand years.

These caves consist of about 19 caves, 4 caves in southeastern side and other fifteen is in northwestern region. The main cave is considered to be the ninth cave and it contains figures of Buddha and also many stupas. Many tourists visit the Mahakali caves every year, especially by the people interested in archeology.
