Cathedral Church of Redemption

Location

Designed by Henry Medd, Cathedral Church of the Redemption resembles the shape of a birthday cake with a candle placed upon it. Situated the north of the Jaipur Column, in the Rashtrapati Bhawan area, the church is not much of historical importance but has delightful interiors that are a treat for its visitors. It has been so built that heat is kept off even when summer is in its prime and the place remains cool and calm as sunlight peeps into the church through small and recessed openings, placed strategically.

Birla Mandir ( Laxmi Narayan Temple)

Location

Also known as the Lakshmi Narayan Temple, it is ideally located in central Delhi (Mandir Marg). This temple dedicated to the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi and Lord Narayana (Lord Vishnu) was built in 1938 by the prominent Indian industrialist Raja Baldev Das Birla and inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi. The temple, built in Orissan style, has a large number of idols representing various gods of Indian pantheon. The well-grafted gardens need a special mention.

Bangla Sahib Gurudwara

Location

Gurdwara Bangla Sahib in Delhi was once a superlative and large bungalow of Raja Jai Singh of Amber (now Jaipur) who commanded great respect and honor in the court of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. It has been converted in to a holy shrine since the eighth Guru Sri Har Krishan accepted the invitation of the king and stayed here for a few months. During his stay in Delhi, the Guru spent most of his time in serving the humble and the sick and directed Diwan Dargah Mal to use the daily offerings made to him by his devotees for the welfare of the poor.

Akshardham Temple

Location

Akshardham is a Hindu temple complex in Delhi. Also referred to as Delhi Akshardham or Swaminarayan Akshardham, the complex displays centuries of traditional Indian and Hindu culture, spirituality, and architecture. It sits on the banks of the Yamuna adjacent to the 2010 Commonwealth Games village. The monument at the center of the complex of built off of the Vastu Shastra and Pancharatra Shastra.

The original temple is located in Gujarat, Gandhinagar area, built in 1992, which gave inspiration to the new Akshardham in Delhi, located on the banks of river Yamuna, near the 2010 Commonwealth Games Village. Both the temples are built by the same religious organization, Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha.

Accessibility
  • The mandir is about 9-10 kms from the New Delhi Railway station, auto Rickshaws are easily available from there.
  • The Akshardham Metro Station can be easily boarded from the New Delhi Metro Station.
  • It is around 4 kms from the Nizamuddin Railway Station, one can take an auto from the prepaid counter at the station.

Sri Govinda Bhagavatpaada Cave

Location

As a legendary place Govinda Bhagavatpaada Cave is closely associated with Sankaracharya. It was here at this cave he had met the great sage Govind Bhagwatpad. It is believed that Sankaracharya took his diksha and spiritual education under this great guru. One of the alluring attractions in Omkareshwar, this cave consists of a main hall and a small sanctum. Carved pillars embellish the hall while the sanctum holds the Shivlinga.

Siddhanath Temple

Location

An architectural marvel that reflects the artistic talents of the medieval people Siddhanath temple is a classic example of Brahminic architecture. Like all other famous temple in Omkareswar this temple also is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Prettily situated on a plateau, this temple gets its support from a highly embellished huge podium with lovely carvings and frescos. All the carvings and frescos portray elephants in various postures. The main shrine is in the center and it has facades on all four sides with splendid decks and spectacularly stamped figures.

Sacred Meeting Point

Location

River Narmada is believed to be the daughter of lord Shiva and holds much religious significance in the life of a pious Hindu. This sacred river found its place in various Puranas where it is narrated that a holy dip and circumvention of this river would fetch salvation. Though this river flows through various regions, when it reach Omkareswar it merges with Kaveri to form an island. This meeting point gains much significance since it is shaped like a holiest symbol Om, which happens to be the most revered of all other symbolic representations.
