Lohangi Rock

Location

One of the objects of Historical and Tourist interest within the town is the Lohangi Rock, an isolated sand stone peak near the Railway Station. The Rock is about 6.086 metres in altitude, and rather a flat top of 9.129 metres in Diameter. On its western side there is low mosque with two Persian inscriptions inside. One dated A.H. 864 ( A.D. 1460), belongs to Mahmud Khilji - I of Malwa and the other is of Akbar, dated A.H. 987 (A. D. 1583). The tomb of Lohangi-Pir ( the title of Sheikh Jalal Chisti), after whom the rock is named is situated on its top.

Rupmati Pavilion

Location

On the lofty crest of the hill to the south beyond the palace of Baz Bahadur stands Roopmati’s Pavilion, a magnificent expression of Afghan architecture. It was originally built as an army observation post.

From its hill perch, this magnificent structure with its two pavilions was a retreat of the lovely queen, Roopmati, from where she could see Baz Bahadur’s Palace and the sacred river Narmada. Sitting at the pavilion, one can enjoy the sunset over the Narmada River.

Darya Khan's Tomb and Hathi Mahal

Location

Darya Khan’s Tomb and Hathi Mahal, Mandu are two of the more important tourist attractions here.

Darya Khan ruled Mandu from 1510 A.D to 1526 A.D. The tomb built by himself before his death stored his body after he passed away and is a grand specimen of Muslim art and architecture. Located between the Hosai village and the Rewa Kund, it is square in shape and is supported by enormous arches. The four corners house four little domes with the main tomb in the central part of the room. The walls of the tomb once exhibited fine and intricate arrangement of beautiful tiles.

Caravan Sarai

Location

Situated opposite the Malik Mughith’s Masjid, Caravan Sarai is a spacious open court with rooms on the sides used for storage of goods and provided living accommodation. It is possible that the Caravan Sarai was built around the same time as the mosque and was perhaps even attached to it.

Rajgaddi and Rajwada

Location

A life-size statue of Rani Ahilyabai sits on a throne in the Rajgaddi within the Fort Complex. This is the right place to begin a tour of Maheshwar, for this pious and wise queen was the architect of its revived importance. Other fascinating relice and heir looms of the Holkar dynasty can be seen in other rooms which are open to the public.

Queen's Fort

Location

A lovely building of 18th century, Queen’s Fort was the residence of Ahalya Bai Holkar, one of the greatest queens India ever had seen. The queen’s fort, which functions between 7 am to 7 pm, is a living monument to the greatness of the late Queen. Situated on the majestic Narmada banks, Queens Fort is the hub of all activities of Maheshwar.

Once functioned as the administrative quarters of the queen, this splendid palace displays her seat, various chhatris and her personal temple with its all elegance. A devotional song in the honour of the late queen has been composed under the auspicious of the Ahalyabhai Trust. The Queens fort also houses a weaver’s cooperative society in its premises.

A hub of classic monuments and sculptures, the Kalinjar Fort has a magnificient history. This colossal fortress contains numerous temples and structures within it, which replicate the creative expertise of the Chandela dynasty. Like all other forts, this massive fort also is built for the purpose of defending the kingdom.

Ajaigarh Fort

Location

Located on the outskirts of the Kajuraho town, Ajaigarh Fort shows the architectural talents of the Chandela Kings. History says that this impressive fortress was built by them when their power in the area was declining.

Ajaigarh Fort stands at an altitude of 1,111 meters on a flat-topped projection of the majestic Vindhyas. A large isolated hilltop fort, Ajaigarh fort holds the panoramic view of the beautiful Ken River. This massive structure was constructed to give protection to the local population from attacks and sieges of outsiders.
